About 74% of the United Arab Emirates' population and 59% of Kuwait's population consists of migrants. Some Western countries also have high migrant populations. Examples : Switzerland and Australia ( 25%), New Zealand (23%) and Canada ( 19%).

Citizens of the EU can work in any of the member countries, subject to fulfilling spesific work standards such as those required of physicians and lawyers.
While the enlargement of the EU from 15 to 25 countries in May 1, 2004, was accompanied by ceremonies and a lot of goodwill, the original 15 can apply immigration quotas on citizens of the 10 joining countries for a period of up to 7 years. Germany, Italy, and Sweeden announced that they would apply this rule in full, while others, such as the UK, Greece, and Belgium, will apply the rule partially.
